Oregon Climate and Suggested Clothing

For current weather in various Oregon cities/towns >>

Because of Oregon's diverse geography the climate varies in the different regions.

Western Oregon Central Oregon
Eastern Oregon Southern Oregon

Western Oregon includes coastal regions, Portland and the Willamette Valley region (Salem, Monmouth, Corvallis and Eugene) and the west Columbia River region west of the Cascade Mountain Range.

The climate in Western Oregon is very typical of the Pacific Northwest. The climate is mild year-around. Neither hot nor cold-it's comfortable all year long.

Summers are mild, with low humidity and very little rain. Pleasant temperatures average in the mid-70s fahrenheit / 22°- 26 °C. August is the warmest month, with temperatures in the low to mid-80s fahrenheit / 27° - 30° C.

Winter is generally a cloudy and rainy season, with temperatures averaging in the mid 40s fahrenheit and low 50s fahrenheit / 6° - 12° C.

Spring and Fall are absolutely gorgeous. Colorful spring flowers and leafy green trees brighten the landscape at every turn, between March - June. Spring weather is always changing—sunny one moment, brief spring showers another. Autumn is long with warm days and cool nights. Brilliant golden and red colored changing trees paint the valleys and hillsides.

There's a stereotype that it rains a lot here. Yes, it does rain, 36 inches (90 cm) a year to be exact—that's what makes this region so green. However Portland's annual rainfall is less than that of Atlanta, Birmingham, Houston, Indianapolis or Seattle. About 88 percent of the area's rain falls between October and May; snowfall and below zero temperatures are rare.

Southern Oregon includes the cities/towns of Roseberg, Ashland, and Medford. The climate in Southern Oregon area is sunnier, warmer and dryer than Portland. Summers are usually hot with temperatures in the mid 80s and 90s (Fahrenheit)

Central Oregon includes the Cascade Mountain area, and the town of Bend, etc. The geography of this area is known as high mountain dessert. It's hot and dry in the summer; cold with snow in the winter. Spring and Autumn seasons are relatively short. There is not much rain. The relative humidity is very low.

Eastern Oregon includes the area east of the Cascade and Blue mountains; and the towns of LaGrande, Baker, Ontario, etc. The climate in Eastern Oregon is similar to Central Oregon and SW Idaho. It's hot, dry and sunny in the summer, with temperatures in the mid 80s and 90s, even a few 100 degree days (fahreheit). It's cold in the winter with some snow (not a lot). Winter temperatures are generally below freezing. Spring and Autumn seasons are relatively short. Summer changes to winter and winter into summer very quickly. There is very little rainfall throughout the year. The relative humidity is VERY low.

Clothing

Western Oregon
Because of western Oregon's mild, cool, and rainy climate, people here tend to dress in casual, comfortable clothes. Layered clothing is common. When the sun comes out, take off a layer or two. Keep a light jacket, sweater or long-sleeve shirt handy for when it gets cool. Umbrellas are optional. The rain in Portland and the Willamette Valley is light and misty, rarely hard and heavy. You'll find that even on rainy days most people don't use umbrellas.

LaGrande and Eastern Oregon: Because of the rugged landscape and lifestyle in Eastern Oregon, the style of dress is VERY casual, practical, and conservative. This is cowboy and timber country. Locals may wear jeans, boots and cowboy hats. The clothing of choice: jeans, T-shirts, polo-shirts, plaid shirts, flannel shirts, cowboy shirts, sweatshirts (it's practically a uniform here), with hiking boots or athletic shoes (if you're not the cowboy boot wearing type). Women dress very casual and seldom wear skirts or dresses. Be sure to bring a winter jacket and gloves. In the winter buildings are kept warm inside, so you don't need a lot of heavy clothes, except for times you plan to be outside. In the summer people wear short-sleeve shirts and shorts. In the spring and autumn the days might be warm, but it gets cold at night. You'll need a jacket or sweater for the evenings.
